CORE FINAL: Digital Story
Digital Story
Luminescent Core Final 2015
Tucker, Saldana and Hadley-Hill

Too many stories remain untold. This digital story project is your opportunity to give voice to one of your family member's stories. Hearing, recording and retelling this story will help you better understand your family history. Because you are shaped by the people in your life, this project will also provide insight into your own identity.

Step 1: Select the person you want to interview and set a date to conduct your interview. You will need to record your interview (audio and/or video) to reference as you write the script for your digital story. Please set a date for your interview ASAP!

Recording options:
  • Online interview: Skype or Google + Hangout interview and screen capture the interview using Quicktime (on a Mac) or ScreenCast-O-Matic with either PC or Mac. Tip: If you are using your parent's computer, please consult them before you install any programs.
  • In person interview: Voice Memo on an iPhone or Easy Voice Recorder free app for android.

Step 2: Submit information about the person you are interviewing and 15 interview questions to this Google Form. Check out the collection of interview questions designed by StoryCorps!
Interview Questions Due: Thursday, January 29th.

Step 3: Share evidence of your interview with your 2A teacher. You can play a short section of your recording or show a clip from the video tape.
Evidence of Interview Due: Tuesday, February 24th.

Step 4: Write a narrative about an event, moment or time in this person’s life based on the information you learned during your interview. You are NOT telling their entire life story. Instead, focus on a particularly interesting story, influential person or event, or life changing experience. Your narrative should contain the following elements:
  • well-chosen details and well-structured event sequences
  • sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters
  • dialogue (*weave actual quotes from the interview into the story)
Narrative Due: Monday, March 10

Step 4: Decide how you want to "show" the story you are telling. Potential ideas:
  • Gather images to "show" your story. These images can be pictures of this person's life (scan old photos and/or use digital copies), photographs of location[s] where story takes places and/or symbolic images to represent parts of their story.
  • Create artwork to tell their story (similar to the StoryCorps approach to animated video).
  • Experiment with stop motion animation.
  • RSA animation
Submit a proposal to this Google Form.
Proposal for Digital Component Due: Monday, March 16th

Step 5: Choose your tool and create your digital story. Use video making software that can be uploaded and published. Tools to consider:
  • WeVideo, iMovie, Movie Maker, or GoAnimate
  • Animoto with voice recording (or live reading of your script)

We welcome your ideas! You can do this entirely on your phone if you have recording and editing tools. Alternatively, you can use your computer with the software that is already on it. We will also spend time in our computer lab for those students who want to use iMovie or WeVideo on the school computers.
Digital Stories Must Be Uploaded to YouTube By Monday, April 6th

Step 6: Share your digital story with the Core! You will need to introduce yourself and briefly introduce your video with a quick explanation of who you interviewed and why you selected this person. You will need to dress nicely on your presentation day.
Core Final Presentations: Tuesday, April 7; Thursday, April 9th; Monday, April 13th

The goal: Create a 3-5 minute video that brings your story to life for your audience. The best digital stories surprise the audience with inventive approaches, well written scripts and emotional moments (sad, funny, heartwarming, shocking). You will be publishing your stories to your YouTube channels to share with a wider audience.

Turning OFF Comments on YouTube

Thank you to all the students who posted their TED-style Talks on YouTube. Many of you selected controversial topics to discuss, so I wanted to walk you through the process of turning off comments. Unfortunately, part of posting our ideas online is there are unkind and ignorant people who may respond to your ideas.

In the famous words of the very wise Taylor Swift "And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate,
hate, hate. Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. I shake it off, I shake it off."

Step 1: Log into your YouTube channel (same email and password as your Gmail). Then click on your image in the upper right hand corner of the screen. A pop up window with a button reading "Creator Studio" will appear. Click "Creator Studio."

Step 2: When you get to your videos, find the one you want to disable comments on. Click the arrow next to "Edit" on the video you want to disable comments on. Select "Info and Settings".

Step 3: Once you select "Info and Settings" and it will take you to the actual video. Once there, click on "Advanced Settings."

Step 4: You can disable comments so no one can post a comment or you can choose to only post comments you approve. To remove the comment feature, just unclick that box. You can also remove the ratings feature, so viewers cannot post a thumbs up or thumbs down on your videos.

If you have trouble with any of this. Just let me know and I'll walk you through it.

I also want to say...I'm so proud of all of you. It's courageous (and a bit scary) to put your ideas out into the world, but it is also so important that you understand you have a valuable voice. We spend time in our class talking about the importance of kind, respectful and supportive communication online. You practice this constantly in our online discussions. My hope is that you will carry these behaviors into your own online communications beyond the classroom. We cannot control what other people say online, but we can push kindness out into the world via our interactions online.
